Boston Athenaeum

Client Snapshots

"When the Boston Athenaeum was undertaking its first capital campaign in more than a century, we knew that a cookie-cutter approach to major fund-raising wouldn’t work. Carol Rosner and Bill Jaques worked with our Campaign Committee, Trustees, and staff to develop a campaign that respected the traditions of our membership while maximizing our opportunities to raise significant funds. As a result, we exceeded our original $19 million goal by $10 million and won support from a broader range of constituencies than ever before. We have very much appreciated their strong but sensitive leadership."

The Athenaeum, one of the world’s great private libraries and long a Boston cultural icon, undertook a complete restoration and renovation of its Beacon Hill facility in the late 1990’s. The Company was asked to succeed prior counsel in the midst the nucleus phase of its $19-million Twenty-First Century Campaign. Working with Director and Librarian Richard Wendorf and Co-Chairs Don Belin, Bayard Henry, and Lionel Spiro, Company consultants Carol Rosner and Bill Jaques refocused campaign strategy, advised on the hiring of the Athenaeum’s first full-time development director, and helped to expand the scope of the overall development program. The campaign was successfully concluded in 2002 with more than $29 million secured in project funds and new endowment.
